Pilates has Heart Second Annual Mat Class to raise funds in honor Terri Dome
Texas Heart Institute partners with WAP to raise awareness

Anyone who knew Terri Dome left with a better heart. It’s ironic that her heart was too weak to support her greatness. Terri was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma at 13-years-old. After a year and a half of chemotherapy and radiation, her cancer went into remission. At 28 years old she started fainting and it was discovered that the chemo and radiation had damaged her heart and lungs. After years of pacemakers, Terri underwent a heart transplant on February 14, 2009 and as soon as her doctors gave her the thumbs up to work out, she found her way to WAPilates.

Kim and Hilary tailored a plan for her condition. Terri said “A big concern about “working out” was a result of my being in recovery from a heart transplant.  After finally getting to a point of positive future health, I was somewhat afraid that I would be limited in my ability to do anything that may be the least bit strenuous. But, with the encouragement of my doctor and the help of Kim and Hilary, I am happy to see that I can do so much.”

Terri remained a fixture in the studio. She had “her” chair and when her health allowed she would sprinkle client’s workouts with her contagious laugh and commentary. And inevitably, clients left with more than a healthier physical body. They left with a more whole heart.

On July 1, 2014 we lost Terri. To honor her, we decided to combine her love of Pilates and WAP and start Pilates has Heart. Our first annual event was held on Valentine’s Day, February 14, 2016. Those who knew and loved Terri came together for a mat class and in a true grass roots way raised over $3,000 for the Texas Heart Institute.

On Saturday, February 12, 2017 Pilates has Heart will hold its second annual mat class at Silver Street Studios. This year, the goal is to reach $15,000 and 100% of the proceeds will be donated to the Texas Heart Institute in honor of Terri Dome.
“Terri’s beautiful heart and mind continues to inspire our research and education and we are deeply honored to be a part of this event celebrating her unwaivering courage and dedication to helping others.” —Keri Sprung, Texas Heart Institute”

Thank you all!

Sunday February 14, 2016 we kicked off our Pilates has Heart event. We had so many wonderful people show up and donate to Texas Heart Institute and the mat class was fun and according to those participating, challenging.

The morning started off with Terri Dome's husband Steve speaking about Terri's life and what Washington Ave Pilates and Texas Heart Institute had done for her during her life. He spoke of all the wonderful work that Texas Heart Institute does, most specifically for women, like Terri.

Then the Mat workout began with Hilary Opheim starting the first half and Courtney Lindsay with the second half. After a full hour of Pilates everyone stayed and enjoyed some wonderful breakfast tacos, pastries and drinks from El Topo food truck.

The weather was breezy and cool with the sun shining in for the class and fresh air all around.

We are excited to see how this event grows each year, hopefully raising more and more money and awareness for women's heart issues and cancer.

We want to thank Carla Valencia with Local Magazine here in Houston for her support, help and marketing for this cause. She was also a wonderful friend to Terri Dome and we know this is a special cause for her as well as us at WAP.

Thank you to our home Silver Street Studios for donating the perfect Event Space for us to use to hold our event.

Thank you to all the donations for our Basket prize! Brooke Feather Store, Rainbow Lodge, and Pilates Style Magazine a very special thanks for all the wonderful Pilates swag and making Pilates has Heart your first official cause. We are so proud.

If you are interested in helping, sponsoring, donating or just participating next year just let us know at our info page for WAP's Cause

We are now 2 days away!

Tickets are selling and the event is almost here! It's not to late if you want to get yours, or just pay at the door! We thought it would be a great time to just give you a little peek into who Terri was and why we loved her so. In 2009 she agreed to be our Client Corner in our Monthly newsletter. Here is what she had to say about Pilates.

"For as long as I remember,  fitness for me meant keeping trim by dieting as needed in order to obtain a look that was pleasing...but recently I found the need for more strength and something that would help ease back and neck pains.  I knew that Pilates involved lots stretching, but I didn’t know how much strength I could gain or how much fun a work-out program could be.
With the help and reinforcement of Kim and Hilary over just 8 weeks I can see a difference in my arms, core and legs that I was not sure was possible. The stretching has helped my posture and relieved the neck and back pains that I had for a long time.  A big concern about “working out” was a result of my being in recovery from a heart transplant in Feb ’09.  After finally getting to a point of positive future health, I was somewhat afraid that I would be limited in my ability to do anything that may be the least bit strenuous. But, with the encouragement of my doctor and the help of Kim and Hilary I am happy to see that I can do so much.
The girls have tailored a plan for me and even took it upon themselves to research my condition to formulate the plan. And, they make it fun to go to class while providing continued results!" Terri Dome, September 2009

We love that not only for Terri but, for many others Pilates and WAP has made a difference for them.  We hope that with this event we can give back to those causes that were so important to Terri and are for many people.

So many of us have been touched by cancer and heart issues with loved ones, friends and sometime ourselves.

Join us for a great Pilates Mat class and some food and all for a great cause. 100% of the proceeds to Texas Heart Institute.

NEW LOCATION for Event and more details.

For those that haven't heard we got a bit concerned with weather and making sure we had our event no matter ice, rain, wind, wet ground...so many things could happen in February in Houston.

Silver Street Studios has opened up the Event Space and we are moving our event there, a block and half from our original but, behind our Washington Ave Pilates studio. So, if you haven't seen our studio or want to just look around we are steps away.

We are now just 12 days away and the Mat class is planned and ready for all participants. The food truck is preparing something special

The event starts at 10am with a short little chat about Pilates Has Heart and our lovely Terri Dome. Then we all get some great Pilates work in as we go through a full mat class, no worries if you are new or advanced.

The Mat portion will be lead by WAP Owner/Director Hilary Opheim and WAP Instructor Courtney Lindsay.

In case of bad weather....let's make sure we still hit the mat

The thing about living in Houston is you never know what the weather will do. One day it is freezing, raining or sun is out and it is a bit warm. Welcome to Winter here in H-Town.

So, as much as we want the sun out and the air crisp but, not cold and the ground that our mats are on dry we could have a totally different situation. Well, no worries here thanks to all the wonderful folks at Silver Street Studios, home of our lovely WAP studio.

They are letting Pilates Has Heart use their fab Event Space if we need to get away from the elements on Sunday Feb 14, 2016.  We will be checking the weather the week before and start of the week and make our decision based off that.

Those who bought tickets we have your email and will let you know and since it is only a block away it is an easy adjustment for all!!!

Sunday Feb 14, is right around the corner. If you haven't bought your tickets yet what are you waiting for?  Get your tickets now!

Pilates Has Heart Event taking shape!

It is now 2016 and we are focusing more than ever on our first Annual Pilates Has Heart Event.

Our location is set at 1502 Sawyet Street, in a beautiful green space. Everyone can bring their mat, a towel, blanket whatever they prefer to participate in our big outdoor Mat class to benefit Texas Heart Institute. The Mat class will be for all levels and led by some of the wonderful WAP instructors. So, even if you have never done Pilates or are an advanced student you will enjoy every moment.

After (or even before) the gourmet food truck El Topo will be be there with some special heart shaped yummies and keep us warm in the tummy if needed.

We set up a page to buy tickets or just contribute if you can't make it. There are 3 different levels of tickets with Red Heart, Silver Heart and Gold Heart. Each level of ticket gets more chances to win our Raffle Basket. This basket has gifts from Rainbow Lodge, Brooke Feather and more!

Many of you know we started this event to honor our client Terri Dome, who passed in 2014. Terri had survived cancer as a child and had a heart transplant in 2009. She was very active in volunteering and helping others who were going through things she had in her life.
We want to help continue shining a bright light for her and carrying on with making a difference, no matter how small. We hope that each year our event is something that helps someone, even if it is just one person.

Our social campaign kicked off January 1st and if you haven't participated well, what are you waiting for? Check out our Instagram account or Facebook page for Pilates Has Heart and see what we are up to. We have videos of Pilates moves by instructors and clients who then hold up our logo or pictures of beautiful poses with logo. Pass them around! Get others to join us!

We are excited to share our passion and Terri's bright light with others and if the weather is cold...we shall bundle up! If it is rainy...we shall hold umbrella's. If it is a monsoon? Well, we may move you to our studio...we can only put up with so much right?

So, countdown to Feb 14th is on! 10am-11:30am we shall see you there

Houston Chronicle Photoshoot with Terri

In April 2014 I got a call from Terri. She had just been interviewed on the phone by a reporter for the Houston Chronicle for an article that was going to run in the Sunday paper soon and it was on Heart issues and women. She told me all about what was discussed from her childhood health to now.

She told the reporter all about WAP and her Pilates. She again said how it had saved her and how the studio and the instructors and clients were like her family. When they asked her about a photo shoot and where would she like it to be she said without hesitating WAP.

She was worried that maybe it would be disruptive and maybe we wouldn't want to do it. I told her we would love to, plus it would mean spending time together! Always a good thing. Plus, she lit up the studio whenever she was there.

We set it up for an afternoon time on a friday as we thought it would be less crowded with clients and she set off to get the perfect workout outfit. She had her hair and makeup done and we all counted the days.

The day of the shoot both Kim Humrichouse and I were there and the photographer shot pics of Terri on the Cadillac, doing some arms and then on the Wunda Chair. The reporter talked to me a bit about how Terri came to us and I told her about our initial phone call and Terri's first visit to WAP.

When the photographer was done Terri asked if he could shoot a few of her and I together just being goofy. He was nice enough to shoot some great ones.

Then we all sat down and the reporter asked both Kim and I about working with Terri and Pilates. Terri again talked about her love of Pilates, WAP and Kim and I. It was a wonderful afternoon and so much was said in regard to what Terri believed, felt and held dear.

On Sunday May 3, 2014 the article came out and of course Terri was not to happy with her picture but, we all thought she looked beautiful...and of course her pants rocked!! She was always styling! She called a bit upset that there wasn't more on WAP and the studio. She was more concerned that they didn't go into detail on her Pilates and how it had helped her. That is the type of person she was, always concerned with her friends and them being happy, ok and taken care of.

That photo shoot was the last time Terri was in our studio. We know she would be happy with Pilates has Heart and that we are continuing her work and keeping her passion and bright light going.

We are on FaceBook!

Pilates has Heart now has a page dedicated to our cause on FaceBook. You can post your thoughts and information on this page as well.  Many of us have memories of Terri Dome and this is where we can put them in remembrance of her and her strength.

Pilates has Heart Facebook

So many people are touched by cancer and heart issues with loved ones. It is something we all share and we hope that every year we are able to bring people together and get a little knowledge, a great pilates workout and then enjoy some refreshments and time together.

Keep checking back on updates, information on how we started and more.

How Pilates has Heart was born

"For as long as I remember,  fitness for me meant keeping trim by dieting as needed in order to obtain a look that was pleasing...but recently I found the need for more strength and something that would help ease back and neck pains.  I knew that Pilates involved lots stretching, but I didn’t know how much strength I could gain or how much fun a work-out program could be.

But, with the encouragement of my doctor and the help of KIm and Hilary I am happy to see that I can do so much.
The girls have tailored a plan for me and even took it upon themselves to research my condition to formulate the plan. And, they make it fun to go to class while providing continued results!"         Terri Dome- September 2009

Terri Dome came to WAP as soon as her doctor gave her the thumbs up to work out after her Heart Transplant. Terri was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma at age 13. After receiving treatment of chemotherapy as well as large doses of radiation over the course of a year and a half, her cancer was in remission. When she began fainting at age 28, she discovered that the radiation that treated her cancer had damaged her heart and lungs. After years of pacemakers, she began to become short of breath and have swelling problems. The pacemakers weren’t working anymore. Terri underwent a surgical procedure known as a “pericardiectomy” in which the some of the pericardium (the outer tissues that surround the heart) is removed. The operation was not successful at improving her breathing. A heart transplant was the next, and last, thing to try. After more than a year of waiting and multiple “dry runs” in which Terri had to be ready and prepped in case a heart became available, she successfully received a donor heart.

Terri was a fixture of light and love at our studio and after her workouts she would sit in the lobby area in "her" chair and visit with other clients, watch the activity and just socialize. She knew every instructor and how they came to WAP, she knew the clients that came in and out and became friends with many. Terri had a gift of making you laugh, feel special and just brought a beautiful energy whenever she was around.

Terri would say that WAP saved her life. She enjoyed not only the benefits to her body and how she continued to get stronger and more flexible but, she truly enjoyed the release for her mind and really slowing down to focus on the work. She loved seeing how one day she could do an exercise that before she couldn't have dreamed of doing. She loved to sit in her chair and watch the instructors train each other. When they would do an advanced move she would calmly nod and say "yea, I do that!" with a straight face but, a sarcastic wit that was all Terri.

Sadly we lost Terri on July 1, 2014. She had survived with her heart for 5 years and had touched us in ways that we still are realizing. On the first anniversary of her passing, July 1, 2015 we decided it was time to continue with Terri's work and remember her in a way she would have loved. Terri did so much work with kids dealing with cancer, The Heart Institute and many others. So, why not combine those with her love of Pilates and WAP.

On February 14, 2009 Terri got her new heart that allowed our lives to be touched by her. So, we thought it only fitting to make our Annual Pilates has Heart event  kick off on February 14, 2016. Plans are in the making and details will come so check back and we hope to have you be a part of this. We will have a great outdoor mat class, an auction, a speaker and refreshments.

If you are interested in donation of auction items or anything you think would be fitting please contact us at info@wapilates.com
